Fake Delivery Driver Steals $11M in Crypto at Gunpoint — ‘Wrench Attacks’ Hit Record High
A San Francisco resident was robbed of $11 million in cryptocurrency after a thief posing as a delivery driver forced entry into a home and carried out a violent early-morning attack. The incident, one of the largest individual crypto robberies in the U.S. this year, occurred near 18th and Dolores streets in the Mission Dolores neighborhood.
The assailant brandished a gun, bound the victim with duct tape, and made off with the digital assets. Police have yet to confirm injuries or announce arrests. Public records attempts to contact the homeowner were unsuccessful.
This robbery underscores a surge in 'wrench attacks'—physical assaults, kidnappings, and coercion targeting crypto holders to extract passwords or funds. The term originates from a webcomic highlighting how physical threats can bypass even the strongest digital security. Such attacks have risen 169% in 2025, reflecting escalating risks for crypto investors.
